2021 Big Data Bowl: Ella Summer

This competition uses NFL’s Next Gen Stats data, which includes the position and speed of every player on the field during each play. You’ll employ player tracking data for all drop-back pass plays from the 2018 regular season. The goal of submissions is to identify unique and impactful approaches to measure defensive performance on these plays. There are several different directions for participants to ‘tackle’ (ha)—which may require levels of football savvy, data aptitude, and creativity.

This is some good stuff good job! I’m curious to see if there is an effect is a defensive back is going up against the #1 receiver vs the #2 or #3

It’s also possible that Tavon Young is covering the 3rd and 4th best receiver who are usually targeted less than the #1 receiver. Hence the lower target rate…

    David Torres

very true b/c I wonder if Callahan will really get thrown at LESS when he’s covering a WR1… super interesting though

I’m guessing this model is missing some fundamentals of how defense is played. I suspect something about the Ravens’ scheme might explain his lower than average target rate. Perhaps he plays a robber role, or acts like the QB’s mirror against mobile QBs in nickle. It’s going to take a lot of tough to ascertain information about defensive context to really nail target probability effect.

This is really the core weakness of all of PFF’s stuff. They are making multiple judgement calls, and one is critical and upfront: what is this player’s actual assignment on this play?

Hunter Wagner

Is she just assuming every play is man coverage? And Eddie jackson is a safety, why is she suggesting he’s manned up on the wr2🤣🤣🤣🤣 like he’s gonna be in a zone most of the time

    vengefulfork

Because chuck Pagano was terrible with using Eddie Jackson
