Online gaming is one of the most popular hobbies these days. This includes following sports scores on the internet, as well as occasionally betting for a team. So imagine everyone’s delight when online hosts for fantasy football started cropping up. Fantasy football is a game that was created, and is now played, by football fanatics. Players are designated either as the owner of a team or its general manager, or are drafted by managers to play the online role of real football players. The members of a team are derived from real players of different teams in the National Football League (NFL).
Fantasy Football: History and Growth
Fantasy football was created in 1963 by three friends who all had connections to the world of football in general, and to the Oakland Raiders in particular. They came up with the idea for this fantasy game in a hotel room in New York, what used to be the Milford Hotel, now known by New Yorkers as the Manhattan Hotel. The initial drafts for the league consisted of other close friends who were football fans as well, and the very first game was played at the recreation room of Wilfred “Bill” Winkenbach’s (the same man who spearheaded the idea for fantasy football) home in Oakland, California.
Six years later, fantasy football was brought to another location by one of the first draftees, Andy Mousalimas. Mousalimas owned a bar, the Kings X, and that was where he initiated the propagation of the game by introducing it to his patrons, both men and women.
The spread of fantasy football throughout the United States was very slow. It took about two decades (1981) for it to reach a pizza parlor in Spokane, Washington called Marias. And it took another decade for the game to be noticed by major sports networks. However, once CBS introduced the game’s beta version in 1997, there was no stopping its rapid climb to the top of the gaming ladder. Fantasy football reached newer heights with the dawn of the internet. Sports networks started hosting its leagues on their websites and came up with their own versions, as well. Although it took another decade before the game truly recognized by the NFL on its website. That neglect, however, did not deter the game’s steady growth between 1997 and 2010.
How to Play Fantasy Football
To start the game off, online gamers who opt to be team managers have to choose first from the following leagues:
Auctions league: involves bidding between team managers for a specific roster of players.
Head to head league: in this league, a player acts as the general manager of his own team. That team eventually competes against various other teams each game week.
Total points league: a type of league wherein the total accumulated points of a manager’s team speeds up its progress to the finals.
Keeper league: choosing this league type will allow the manager to maintain some of the players in his roster from one year to the next. A variation of this is the Dynasty league wherein almost all of the players can be kept.
Salary cap league: an a subset of the Dynasty league wherein a team’s roster depends on the salary cap or the maximum amount that the manager has spent for that team.
PPR League: also known as the Points per Reception fantasy football league. This involves a different type of scoring system from other leagues by giving more significance to wide receiver players as well as tight ends. A variation of this is the Dual Quarterback league.
Daily fantasy league: unlike the keeper league, managers on a daily fantasy game can only keep their players for a day or one weekend.
Playoff league: during the playoffs for the NFL, the NFL and a lot of other host websites offer to host the playoff league wherein a league player gets to choose an NFL player and accrues points based on the real NFL player’s performance.
Once a fantasy football manager has already chosen a league from any of the above, it is then time for the real game. Other players are drafted in order to complete the fantasy football team. A lot of research has to be done when it come to drafting other players, so that a ranking can be created according to the manager’s preference.
As soon the entire roster has been drafted, the team can then start competing against other fantasy football teams. This competition happens in conjunction with the games played by real NFL teams. Team managers often make improvements on their teams for the entire duration of the NFL season, often dropping some players and drafting new ones.
